Madrid is getting ready to welcome the Year of the Dragon

For the ninth consecutive year, the splendid city of Madrid is transformed into a stage where Chinese culture comes to life. To commemorate the start of the Year of the Dragon, which will take place on Saturday 10 February, the city council has put together an exciting programme of activities. From 2 to 29 February you have the chance to immerse yourself in Chinese culture and this magnificent celebration. LOCK & enjoy! shares the events that you can’t miss! Take note!

Spring Market

The Spring Market will take place on 9, 10 and 11 February. Plaza Junta Municipal del Distrito de Usera becomes a hub of the crafts and gastronomy of this fascinating country. Wandering through the various stands looking at all kinds of crafts and products is a must. Traditional painting and the art of Chinese calligraphy are also on display.

Chinese New Year Celebrations

As we mentioned, the Year of the Dragon will officially begin on Saturday 10 February. To commemorate it, a great celebration with music by DJ Yang awaits you in the Pradolongo Park from 6:00 pm to 8:15 pm. The festival will end with a fireworks display.

Chinese New Years Grand Parade

More than a thousand artists, live music, dances, traditional costumes and three imposing dragons will take to the streets of Madrid’s Chinatown. It will take place on Sunday 11 February, from midday to 3:00 pm. Three hours of performance, excitement and colours for the whole family to enjoy. The parade will start on Calle de Marcelo Usera and will end on Avenida de Rafaela Ybarra.

China Taste Festival

Do you want to get to know Chinese gastronomy first hand? In that case, take advantage of the China Taste festival. To celebrate the New Year, 17 restaurants in the capital will offer a special menu with the most typical New Year’s dishes. As if that weren’t enough, you’ll have more opportunities to sample succulent dishes. For instance, at the Spring Market or at the food trucks in Plaza España. Finally, Usera also hosts a tea and pastry tasting.

Spring Run

Sports enthusiasts have yet another reason to visit Madrid. On 18 February, the Spring Run will take place, which is another way of welcoming the New Year. This activity will start and finish in Paseo de Recoletos and will pass through Plaza de Colón, Plaza Castilla and the near the Santiago Bernabéu stadium, depending on the distance you choose. You can choose between 5, 8 or 16 kilometres.

Chinese Temple Festival

On 24 and 25 February you have a date with Chinese theatre, art and culture. Theatre performances such as the Sichuan Opera, Kung Fu shows, acrobatics and much more await you in Plaza España. All this is complemented by the Chinese food trucks we mentioned earlier.
