Pregón (Opening Ceremony)
The kickoff for Holy Week in Malaga will be the Pregón. This year, it will take place on March 16 at the Cervantes Theater. The pregonero, designated by the Malaga Brotherhoods Association, is Augusto Pansard Anaya. Originally from Seville, he is a member of the brotherhoods of Pollinica, Sentencia, and Piedad.
Palm Sunday
On March 24, the procession of La Pollinica takes place, one of the must-see events. Its name comes from the presence of a donkey on which Jesus entered Jerusalem. Of course, it’s common for attendees to carry palms or olive branches.
Holy Wednesday
Another highly anticipated procession is that of El Cautivo. You will be thrilled by the delicacy and beauty of the flowers adorning the paso of Jesus Cautivo. This procession, which will take place this year on March 27, departs from the Church of San Pablo to end its route at the Cathedral of Malaga.
You should also not miss the procession of El Rico, which honors Jesus El Rico along with the Virgin of Love. In addition to the fascinating baroque aesthetics of the image and its brotherhood, it features one of the most emotional moments: the release of a prisoner who has not committed a crime of bloodshed.
Holy Thursday
Undoubtedly, one of the most iconic scenes of Holy Week in Malaga in 2024 is the accompaniment of the Legion in the procession of Christ of the Good Death. This highly anticipated moment will take place on March 28, during Holy Thursday.
Apart from the Legion, there are other military accompaniments. The Paratroopers, the Navy, the Cavalry, and the Civil Guard are part of Ánimas de Ciegos, La Soledad, La Zamarrilla, and the Brotherhood of the Expiration, respectively.
Good Friday
On the 29th, the procession of the Sepulcher takes place. It’s an event marked by silence and solemnity, as it commemorates the death of Jesus Christ. Likewise, you’ll have the opportunity to contemplate the Throne of the Virgin of Solitude and the Throne of Our Father Jesus of the Holy Sepulcher.
Easter Sunday
On Easter Sunday, there is only one procession, that of the Brotherhood of the Most Holy Resurrected Christ. With this act, the Malaga Holy Week is concluded.
Other Plans
In addition to attending the processions, which, except for Saturday, span the entire week, there are other activities and plans you can undertake if you visit the city:
- Visit the Basilica of the Brotherhood of Hope. It houses a wonderful collection of Catholic art. Additionally, during Holy Week, the brotherhoods and fraternities exhibit sculptures and religious items.
