What to See in Málaga During Holy Week 2026?

Malaga is a fascinating city and if you add to this the Holy Week you have an ideal destination for your next vacation. From LOCK & enjoy! we give you an overview of this year’s program, don’t miss it!

Announcement

The official opening of Holy Week in Málaga will be marked by the opening proclamation (pregón). This year, it will take place on March 21 at the Cervantes Theatre. The speaker appointed by the Agrupación de Cofradías de Málaga is Reverend Father José Manuel Ferrary. Originally from Málaga, he is a member of several brotherhoods, including Estudiantes, Mena, Fusionadas, and Misericordia.

Palm Sunday

On March 29, the Pollinica procession takes place, one of the must-see events of Málaga’s Holy Week. Its name comes from the donkey (pollino) on which Jesus entered Jerusalem. As tradition dictates, many attendees carry palm leaves or olive branches during the procession.

Easter Monday

Another of the most anticipated processions is that of El Cautivo. You will be amazed by the delicacy and beauty of the flowers that decorate the float of Jesús Cautivo. This procession, which will take place this year on March 30, departs from the Iglesia de San Pablo and returns to the same church after reaching the Málaga Cathedral along its route.

Holy Wednesday

You should also not miss the procession of El Rico, which honors Jesus the Rich with the Virgin of Love. In addition to the fascinating baroque aesthetics of the image and its confraternity, it features one of the most exciting moments: the release of a prisoner who has not committed a blood crime.

Maundy Thursday

Without a doubt, one of the most iconic scenes of Holy Week in Málaga 2026 is the participation of the Spanish Legion in the procession of the Cristo de la Buena Muerte. This highly anticipated moment will take place on April 2, during Holy Thursday.

Apart from the Legion, there are other military accompaniments. The Paratroopers, the Navy, the Cavalry and the Civil Guard are part of Ánimas de Ciegos, the Soledad, the Zamarrilla and the Cofradía de la Expiración, respectively.

Good Friday

On Friday, the Procession of the Holy Sepulchre takes place. It is an event marked by silence and solemnity, as it commemorates the death of Jesus Christ. During the procession, you will also have the opportunity to see the throne of the Virgin of Soledad and the throne of Nuestro Padre Jesús del Santo Sepulcro.

Easter Sunday

On Easter Sunday, a single procession is held, that of the brotherhood of the Holy Christ Resurrected. With this act, the Malaga Holy Week comes to an end.

Other plans

In addition to attending the processions that, except for Saturday, cover the whole week, there are other activities and plans that you can carry out if you visit the city:

  • Visit the Basilica of the Brotherhood of Hope. It treasures a wonderful collection of Catholic art. In addition, during Holy Week, the brotherhoods and confraternities exhibit carvings and religious elements.
  • Taste lemons with salt. During the long walks involved in the processions, the locals consume lemons with salt to refresh themselves, do you dare to taste them?
  • Take a gastronomic tour. Do not hesitate to take advantage of your visit to delight yourself with the best Lenten dishes in the restaurants of the city.
  • Go to Riogordo. Less than 40 minutes from Malaga you will find the village of Riogordo. For decades they have been performing a representation of the Passion of Christ that is worth contemplating.
