Santa Bárbara Castle in Alicante: everything you should know before visiting

Before heading up, there’s something important you should know: the castle isn’t just a single spot, but a collection of spaces, levels, and corners that you discover little by little.

You don’t just come here to take a photo and leave. You come to walk along the walls, enter the towers, look out from the viewpoints, and understand how this place has been key to the city’s history.

Plus, access is quite simple and suits all types of travelers, making it an essential visit suitable for everyone.

Walls, towers, and corners with history

Once you’re at the top, the first thing that surprises you is the size. The castle is much bigger than it looks from below.

The tour usually starts at the highest part, known as the Torreta. From here, you have some of the best views of all Alicante. The sea, the port, the city… everything is at your feet. It’s that typical moment where you take out your phone and know that no photo will do justice to what you’re seeing.

As you head down, other spaces appear like the Patio de Armas (Parade Ground), one of the most important points of the castle. This is where military life was concentrated, and today it’s one of the busiest spots for visitors.

You can also walk along the walls, which allow you to stroll around the perimeter of the castle while enjoying different perspectives. Each side offers a different view: towards Postiguet beach, towards the city center, or towards the mountains.

Another interesting corner is the Baluarte de la Reina (Queen’s Bastion), a defensive area that perfectly shows how the castle’s military system was structured at the time.

The best part is that there isn’t just one set route. You can visit this place at your own pace, stop wherever you like, and discover small details that make the visit much richer.

History of Santa Bárbara Castle

The history of Alicante Castle is long and fascinating. Although its origins date back to earlier times, much of the current structure has influences from the Muslim period.

The castle has passed through different hands over the centuries, from Muslims to Christians, and each stage has left its mark. This is noticeable in the architecture, the layout of the spaces, and the way it’s built.

One of the key moments was the Christian conquest in the 13th century, which marked a turning point in the history of the site. From then on, the castle was adapted to new defensive needs.

Later, in the 16th and 17th centuries, major renovations were carried out to modernize its structures, especially with artillery in mind.

Today, walking through the castle is like walking through a summary of Alicante’s history. Every stone has a story to tell.

How to get up to Santa Bárbara Castle

One of the advantages of the castle is that you can choose how you want to get to the top.

The most comfortable option is the elevator, which connects directly to one of the castle areas from the base of the mountain. It’s fast and practical, ideal if you don’t want to walk too much. Plus, if you choose this route, we guarantee the trip is unforgettable, as the elevator goes through the very structure of the castle. However, it costs €2.70 per person (round trip).

But if you feel like something more active, you can also walk up. There are different routes, but one of the most popular is the one that starts near Mount Benacantil, which is also the one cars use to go up. The path is accessible and, although it has a bit of a slope, it’s quite manageable. It’s another great way to take in the city as you go up. Keep in mind that near this route is the MARQ, one of the city’s main landmarks if you’re not sure which museums to visit in Alicante.

There’s also the option of driving to a nearby area, though you’ll have to walk a bit after that. This is because you can’t drive all the way to the top; there’s a small dirt parking lot right halfway up to leave your vehicle.

The views from the castle: the real show

If there’s one thing that defines the experience, it’s the views of Alicante from the castle.

From the top, this Mediterranean city opens up completely before you. You see the coastline, the movement of the port, the downtown streets, and on sunny days, the view is endless.

One of the best times to enjoy these views is at sunset. The light changes, the colors get warmer, and the city takes on a different rhythm.

It’s the kind of place where you want to stop, sit down, and just look. That’s why it’s one of the most romantic plans for both locals and tourists.

The Santa Bárbara Castle in Alicante is much more than a tourist spot. It’s history, it’s scenery, and it’s one of those places that stays in your memory. Going up, exploring it, and enjoying its views is almost mandatory if you visit the city. It doesn’t matter if it’s your first time or if you’ve been before, there’s always something new to discover.
