Once you’re in the city, start by storing your bags in a safe luggage locker. That’s one way to stop worrying and focus on what really matters. This way you don’t waste time wandering around pointlessly, which you can’t afford to do.
Pre-recommendations
Before you set out on the streets, there are a few things you should know. First, visit Malaga in spring or autumn. The reason is simple: it is too hot in the summer months, especially July or August. Also, don’t go on special holidays, such as Easter or the Feria de Abril.
The first day
The first day starts by choosing one of the lockers in Malaga that we offer at LOCK & enjoy! Once you’re ready, the Plaza del Obispo is a good place to start your morning visit. On the ground floor you will find numerous establishments where you can have breakfast and review this itinerary. You’ll also be able to enjoy good food facing the city’s cathedral, the number one stop.
Later, the Santa Iglesia Catedral Basílica de la Encarnación is Malaga’s cathedral, a building steeped in history. The Catholic Monarchs ordered its construction after conquering the city in 1487. Built in the renaissance style, it is considered one of the most valuable buildings in Andalusia. A visit is therefore a must if you love history and architecture.
After this place, head towards the Alcazaba of Malaga, a striking Islamic palace fortress. It has numerous gardens and courtyards full of beautiful flowers. Fortunately, you can request a free guided tour to discover the building in detail while spending as little as possible.
Remember don’t miss the city’s Roman theatre, which is very well preserved. It dates back to the 1st century AD and is one of the best preserved constructions from Roman times. It’s right at the foot of the Alcazaba, so you won’t have far to go. Even though it is medium-sized, it is well worth a few minutes of your time.
To round off the day, one of the stops we love to make at LOCK & enjoy! is Gibralfaro Castle. The reason is very simple: you can watch the sunset from its viewpoint. It overlooks the coast, which makes it easy to take beautiful photographs. It is also possible to visit the enclave itself and walk along the different paths that ascend from the base of the hill.
Second day
To start off the second day, you might want to go to Malaga’s central market. There you can have breakfast or a snack, as there are bars inside. But that’s not all, as there are numerous stalls selling fresh food. Fish and seafood caught on the Costa del Sol itself are particularly noteworthy.
Once you have seen the market, it is time to go to the Plaza de la Constitución, one of the most popular places in the city. Much of the residents’ urban life passes through this place. It hosts concerts, exhibitions, open-air markets and the New Year’s Eve chimes. It is therefore essential to drop by and have a drink to regain your strength.
Close to the square is Calle Larios, which is the main avenue in Malaga. It is pedestrianised and full of all kinds of shops, making it easy to find a souvenir and also walk around. It has a long history, as until the 1960s it was the area where gin was distilled.
To finish off the second day, which is quieter than the first, it’s time to go out for tapas. And out of all the options, at LOCK & enjoy! we recommend Calle Granada. There are some popular establishments here, such as Casa Lola, and the buildings are renowned for their traditional architecture.
