Columbus House
This is one of the most beautiful and emblematic buildings, both in this neighbourhood and in the whole city. It’s 500 years old and it is believed that Christopher Columbus once stayed here. The period when he was in the house was during his voyage to discover the New World in 1492. He would stay there during his stopover before crossing the Atlantic. Although we don’t know for certain whether this was the case, the building is closely linked to everything related to the first voyage to America.
In fact, the house is now a museum dedicated to the story of this historic event and to Columbus’s link with Gran Canaria. Spain’s first town square
This is the Plaza de Santa Ana, which was the first of its kind in Spain. Some of the city’s main buildings, like the cathedral, were built around it. The town hall and the bishop’s palace were also built there. So it’s essential to go there if you visit Las Palmas de Gran Canaria.
A detail you’ll notice before entering the square are eight bronze dogs. They represent the main islands of the archipelago and are known as the guardians of Santa Ana. If you’re looking for somewhere to take a nice selfie, this is one of the best places to do it.
