What is the origin of the sea festivals in Málaga? When and where are they celebrated?
The celebration of this festival dates back to the 18th century, as this was the time when devotion to the Virgen del Carmen spread among Andalusian fishermen. For this reason, the central act consists of carrying the Virgin’s image on a boat adorned with flowers, accompanied by dozens of other vessels, in what is very similar to a maritime procession.
It is celebrated every year on July 16, although in certain neighbourhoods and districts of the city, this event extends for several days with numerous activities both before and after the main celebration.
It is also important to bear in mind, before enjoying the maritime festival in Málaga, that there is no specific area or neighbourhood where they are held. Most of the coastal neighbourhoods with fishing traditions have their own brotherhood, procession, and popular celebration. The most well-known include El Palo, Pedregalejo, Huelin, El Perchel, and La Malagueta.

Casetas, Verbenas, and Concerts
Concerts, open-air dances, and fairground stalls are an essential part of any festival in Andalusia. Head to Plaza Padre Ciganda (El Palo), Parque Huelin, or Plaza de la Milagrosa to enjoy the lively festive atmosphere, both during the day and at night.
There’s live music, mainly featuring local bands, as well as popular dances and contests for both adults and children. Additionally, every evening the aforementioned plazas become the epicentres of the nightlife, hosting orchestras and DJs offering a variety of entertainment. In previous years, themed nights have also been organised.
Processions
The maritime and land processions are among the most beautiful and impressive activities of the sea festivals due to their religious and artistic character.
We recommend the one in El Palo, which begins at the Parroquia de Nuestra Señora de las Angustias and ends at Playa del Dedo. Another notable procession starts at the Parroquia de San Patricio and heads to Playa de San Andrés in Huelin.
Bear in mind that once the Virgin’s image arrives at the beach, after being carried on shoulders by land, she is placed in a “jábeja” (a traditional fishing boat) adorned and accompanied by other similar boats for the maritime procession. It’s a spectacle that gathers thousands of people amidst chanting and fireworks.
Competitions
The “jábeja” is one of the central elements honouring the city’s fishing traditions. Consequently, a regatta is held every year at San Andrés Beach in Huelin.
It’s fascinating to watch this race, as these types of boats are now almost obsolete and lack engines. The duration and outcome of the regatta are thrilling due to the physical effort required from the participants.
At Playa de El Palo, additional sporting competitions are organised, such as beach football, pétanque, or sack races. These events are open to both children and adults, fostering community spirit and reinforcing the traditional essence of activities held in honour of the Virgen del Carmen.
Traditional Cuisine
After a morning full of activities, we recommend a tapas route around Málaga.
You can also visit the numerous “chiringuitos” (beach bars) and clubs along the promenades of El Palo and Pedregalejo. It’s a great opportunity to savour Andalusian cuisine. During the maritime festival in Málaga, dishes like “espetos” (grilled sardines), paella, and fried fish are prepared. Cooking contests with popular tastings and prizes for the best tapas are also organised.
Sea-themed Markets
Shopping is yet another highlight of these festivities. Popular markets with a maritime flair are set up along Paseo Marítimo de Huelin and around Parque del Oeste.
