Route through the courtyards of Palma: discover their history and hidden beauty
The route we have prepared at LOCK & enjoy! is a real opportunity to discover one of the beauties of Palma de Mallorca. Join us on this journey through the past and present!
Can Balaguer
The courtyard of Can Balaguer is located in the heart of Mallorca, about a 10-minute walk from the Cathedral of Palma. It is considered one of the most representative courtyards of Mallorcan stately architecture.
Originally it belonged to a very important family of traders from Palma and later to the Balaguer family, hence its name. Nowadays, it has been transformed into a famous cultural centre that allows visitors to immerse themselves in a noble house of the era. It is also used for exhibitions and cultural events aimed at better understanding local history and art.
It stands out for its stone structure and its imperial staircase, a very characteristic detail of mallorcan courtyards, also has a well and abundant vegetation, allowing the space to have a calm and sophisticated atmosphere.
Can Vivot
For us, at LOCK & enjoy!, it is the most spectacular of all, as it is a clear example of the baroque architecture of the time.
The construction of Can Vivot dates back to the 17th century and stands out for a design that reflects the opulence that characterized the Mallorcan aristocracy. On the outside, there is a gate that allows you to admire its beauty without entering, although if you want to visit it, you must make an appointment in advance.
It is a jewel of architecture due to its imposing stone staircase that allows you to go up to the upper floor. As for the structure, it is composed of large arches and columns of classical style that give the courtyard a statelier touch. We would like to highlight that it also has certain Italian architectural influences due to the island’s connections with this country.
Casal Solleric
Casal Solleric houses the largest municipal centre of contemporary art, so it is a good opportunity to contemplate the courtyard and the different artworks on display.
It was built in the 18th century by the Solleric family, one of the most influential in Palma, we have to choose one word that defines this courtyard, it is elegance. It is characterized by a series of marble columns that support a ceiling adorned with classic details. The semi-circular arches also give the courtyard a greater degree of majesty. Virtually the entire structure is decorated with ornamental elements and small details that reflect the luxury characteristic of the Casal Solleric courtyard.
Midway through the route, we recommend taking a short break to enjoy the cuisine of Palma de Mallorca at the many bars and restaurants in the area.
Ca la Gran Cristiana
At Ca la Gran Cristiana, you can also visit the Museum of Mallorca to learn in-depth about the city’s history, as well as its art and culture. The courtyard is housed in an old palace dating back to the 16th century. It owes its name to the matriarch of the family who lived in this house, as she had a strong religious devotion.
The structure has a great renaissance and gothic influence, very typical of the time. Moreover, the courtyard is square, surrounded by stone columns, and has a staircase to access the upper floors. At Ca la Gran Cristiana, a well, an indispensable element in the architecture of Mallorcan courtyards, is also present.

Can Alemany
This courtyard is also located in the heart of the city and is considered by historians as one of the quintessential Baroque courtyards of Palma. It is a clear example of how mallorcan courtyards have been clear witnesses of the passage of time, yet without losing their essence.
Building (17th century) has a courtyard that mixes elements from different eras, such as the Gothic staircase or a 19th-century gallery. Furthermore, the facade has 3 floors with a semi-circular portal and another one to the right. It owes its name to Jaume Joan Alemany, a highly recognized doctor of the time, was also the residence of the famous chronicler Joan Alemany y Moragues.
It is important to highlight that it retains all its structure and design over the years without any significant restoration. Currently, it is used to house various institutions, such as the Institute of Balearic Studies.
Can Bordils
Can Bordils houses the Municipal Archive of Palma de Mallorca. It was no coincidence that this place was chosen, as it is one of the oldest stately homes. It was built in the 13th century on foundations from the Muslim era.
The predominant architectural style is gothic, although it has undergone numerous renovations and transformations. It is characterized by a sober yet elegant design, very typical of the residences of the nobility in the Middle Ages. On the other hand, the courtyard provides a fresh and bright space to the entire building, highlighting also the columns and stone arches.
