What is it?

The Behobia Race in San Sebastián is one of the most popular races in Spain and the first in the Basque Country. It takes place on November 10th and covers approximately 20 kilometers.

The race is named after its starting point, Behobia (a district of Irún), and runs all the way to San Sebastián. It’s famous among runners for its demanding course, which includes several hills and an incredible festive atmosphere, thanks to the support of the local crowds.

In previous editions, more than 30,000 people participated, making it an event with a significant economic, social, and tourism impact on San Sebastián. The route also offers stunning views of the Guipúzcoa landscape.

What’s its origin?

The first race took place in 1919, organized by the Cyclist Society of San Sebastián. However, the race was interrupted for several years due to various circumstances, including the Spanish Civil War (1936-1939).

In 1964, the tradition was revived and has been held continuously ever since. Although it initially started as a cycling event, it gradually evolved into a running competition, welcoming participants of all levels.

The Course

As mentioned, it’s a challenging race, but this doesn’t stop anyone over 16 years old from participating.

Here’s a step-by-step breakdown of the route.

First part

  • The flat start line is along the Bidasoa River, with a gentle climb towards the city center of Irún, where the streets are filled with cheering crowds.
  • After passing through Ventas de Irún, the terrain becomes more challenging with small hills.
  • Once you reach the Alto de Arretxe (km 34), the descent is gentle, leaving Irún behind. Take this opportunity to regain energy.
  • Next is the climb to Alto de Gaintxurizketa—a steep but short incline that leads to a two-lane road. The festive atmosphere is strong here, especially near the end.
  • After cresting this hill, you’ll have a long downhill stretch towards Errentería—a perfect time to gather your strength while enjoying the scenery.
  • The Errentería section is relatively flat, and after passing through the town center, you’ll face the Capuchinos hill—a short but tough incline. Afterward, it’s downhill to Pasaia, one of the most scenic sections with views of the bay and harbor.

Second part

  • In the final section, you’ll tackle the ascent and descent of Buenavista, the gateway to San Sebastián. In the Herrera neighborhood, you’ll climb to Alto de Miracruz (1 km).
  • The descent continues along Ategorrieta Avenue into the Gros neighborhood, with the center of Donostia in sight.
  • To finish, there’s a short incline along Navarra Avenue before reaching the straight path to Zurriola Beach, where the finish line awaits—a truly thrilling moment!

Tips

The Behobia Race in San Sebastián requires both physical and mental preparation. At LOCK & enjoy!, we recommend following these guidelines to make your race a success.

Firstly, train on hilly routes to strengthen your legs and improve endurance. Also, try doing practice runs of 15–20 kilometers to ensure your body is ready for the race distance.

Proper nutrition and hydration are essential in the weeks leading up to the race. Focus on a carbohydrate-rich diet (bread, pasta, etc.) in the days before the race. On race day, eat a light but energy-packed breakfast, such as wholegrain toast and a piece of fruit.

Stay hydrated during the race. There are several aid stations along the route. You can also bring energy bars if they help you maintain your strength. Additionally, wear breathable sportswear and comfortable running shoes suited to your gait.

Once you’ve crossed the finish line, it’s time to relax and enjoy the city without any worries. Store your belongings in our Plaza Sarriegi lockers and explore San Sebastián free from burden!
