Discover the Secret Corners of Madrid!

Next, we reveal some of Madrid’s secret corners that are not among the top sites to visit but are well worth it for their cultural, historical, and artistic appeal.

The Mountain of Cats

In early 2024, this magical spot was reopened to the public after being closed for 20 years. Located within El Retiro Park, it was built in the 19th century by order of King Ferdinand VII. The name of this place comes from the fact that it used to be the shelter for Madrid’s felines.

It is an artificial mountain that was used as an exhibition hall until its closure. It features a series of small pathways with ascending gardens and ponds, which are adorned with artificial waterfalls.

At LOCK & enjoy!, we highly recommend it as it is a true oasis of peace, perfect for relaxing and disconnecting from the hustle and bustle of the city centre.

Angelita Cocktail Bar

The decor of Angelita Cocktail Bar is one of the most striking features of this venue. It is inspired by the clandestine atmosphere of the 1920s and is known for its menu of classic and traditional cocktails, including ingredients like pear, artichoke, and ham.

Another notable aspect is its use of products directly sourced from the garden and its commitment to zero waste. In 2022, they even decided to stop using ice to save energy.

We would like to highlight that in 2021, it was rated as the best cocktail bar in Spain. It is located in the centre, specifically at Calle de la Reina, 4.

Dinner in a Chapel?

If you prefer more original and unique plans, we encourage you to visit Caluana, located very close to Plaza Mayor.

The menu is a mix of Italian and Spanish flavours, creating a true fusion on the palate of each customer who decides to visit this unique place.

Additionally, the dining room is situated in a chapel that was part of the old Santa Cruz Temple and later became the first headquarters of the Madrid Stock Exchange. However, the structure and design maintain its original style, with a classic look and a baroque barrel vault decorated with plasterwork and gold leaf elements.

On the other hand, there is also a greenhouse for those who prefer a more intimate and cosy space, featuring lush vegetation and mirrors.

The Rock Grandma

At Calle Peña Gorbea, 22, there is a statue worth mentioning; it was erected in honour of Doña Ángeles Rodríguez Hidalgo.

She was a woman from Vallecas who developed a passion for heavy metal in her old age. Her attendance at AC/DC concerts made her a popular figure among fans of this music genre. She even had her own section in the famous magazine Heavy Rock.

After her passing in 1993, a bronze statue was erected in her honour, notable for its raised fist forming the famous “metal horns.”

The Door of Ratoncito Pérez

Despite increasing numbers of visitors, it remains one of the lesser-known spots for tourists.

Located in Banco de España Metro Station, the exact origin is unknown, but it makes sense for it to be in this area, as this popular figure must collect the tickets to exchange them for teeth.

It is somewhat tricky to find, as it is only 15 centimetres tall. Look at the bottom edge of the aforementioned metro station, but on the side that leads to Palacio de Buenavista.

Secret Tunnels

If you have an upcoming anniversary with your partner or want to surprise them, we encourage you to discover the Bodega de los Secretos. It is in the famous Letras neighbourhood, specifically at Calle San Blas, 4.

It is a magical, unique, and cosy restaurant where you can enjoy an unmatched romantic evening. In the 17th century, it was a wine cellar that, even with its renovations, retains its singular appearance as a labyrinth of galleries and caves.

It offers a Mediterranean menu and hosts numerous events.

Beach in Madrid?

In the heart of Malasaña, very close to our locker location, there is a restaurant called Ojalá, which features a beach with a beach bar on its lower floor.

It is a chill-out space similar to those in Ibiza, where sand covers the entire floor. It attracts people of all ages, as it is an ideal place for drinks with its low tables, soft cushions, and dim lighting.

Additionally, the menu hides true culinary delights.

A Garden on Montera

Can you imagine a small garden on Calle Montera in Madrid? It is the Secret Garden of Salvador Bachiller. Head to the store of the same name and go up to the fourth floor, where the rooftop is located.

It is a true urban oasis in the heart of Madrid where you can relax, rest, and disconnect. It is filled with colourful hydrangeas, vines, and vibrant plants. There is also a tea salon that feels like a fairy tale.

Enjoy Madrid! Take advantage of our discounts for booking a locker in advance. We look forward to seeing you.
