Saturday, 10th August marks the start of one of Spain’s most important festivals: San Sebastián’s Big Week. At LOCK & enjoy! we couldn’t miss this event, so in this post, we explain everything you need to enjoy unforgettable festivities.

We already have lockers in San Sebastián! We are located in the Old Part, specifically at Sarriegi Plaza, 7. We look forward to seeing you from 10th August.

What’s the Origin?

The city of San Sebastián suffered a fire in 1813, which resulted in the loss of its status as a military and commercial stronghold. This led to a transformation into a tourism-focused city, albeit only in the summer. Most people who visited the city came for its beaches. However, the authorities and private initiatives sought additional attractions to ensure that the beach wasn’t the only and main advantage.

The aim of organizing other activities and events was to extend visitors’ stays. Over the years, tourism declined due to historical, economic, and political reasons, and so San Sebastián’s Big Week evolved into a cultural and popular expression more oriented towards the locals than the elites of previous times.

Experience San Sebastián’s Big Week!

It is important to note that this is Donostia’s main festival. Although its duration has varied over the years, it has always been held on 15th August, coinciding with the Feast of the Assumption of the Virgin.

The festivities start on Saturday, 10th August, and end on the 17th. A whole week filled with activities that we explain in this article so you can choose the ones you like the most.

Fireworks Contest

The pyrotechnic shows are a prominent part of San Sebastián’s Big Week, as they are launched every day from La Concha Bay.

The shows start at 22:45 and last about 30 minutes. At LOCK & enjoy! we recommend that you arrive before the scheduled time, as it gets very crowded, making it difficult to find a good spot to enjoy the display.

The companies responsible for the fireworks are judged by a public jury to choose the winner. All companies are highly recognised nationally and internationally and offer different products and techniques, so the spectacle and fun are guaranteed every day.

Cannon Shot

Unlike other city festivals, Donostia does not have a traditional opening speech to mark the beginning of the festivities. Instead, there is a live event where a cannon is fired. The preparation is carried out by a group of people dressed in military uniforms from the era, led by the Major Gunner.

This takes place on 10th August at 19:00 in Alderdi Eder Gardens. Once the cannon shot is over, the song Artillero dale fuego is played, a popular chant performed by various local groups.

Concerts

Concerts are also a key element of San Sebastián’s Big Week because they attract a large number of people, as they are free of charge.

All concerts start at 23:45 at Tomás Alba Square (Sagües) and last about 90 minutes. The singers and bands have already confirmed their attendance:

  • 10th August: Amparanoia & Artistas del Gremio.
  • 11th August: Esne Beltza.
  • 12th August: Ben Yart + Kiliki Frexko & Brava Showcase.
  • 13th August: Nil Moliner.
  • 14th August: Totally Tina! Tribute to Tina Turner.
  • 15th August: Nøgen.
  • 16th August: Los Zigarros.
  • 17th August: La La Love You.

The variety of musical genres ensures the concerts stand out for their originality and diversity. Book a locker at LOCK & enjoy! – Old Part to keep your belongings safe during the Donostian night.

We’d like to highlight that in the square where the concerts are held, you have a wide range of food trucks to buy food and drinks throughout the night.

Attractions and Fairs

On Urdaneta Street and Paseo Nuevo, you can enjoy popular attractions, suitable for both adults and children, such as the Ferris wheel or bumper cars.

These are open to the public every day during the Big Week from 11:00 to 14:00 and from 16:00 to 01:00. Keep in mind that the weekends will be the busiest.

Sports Activities

Sporting tournaments are also a must in this important festival. Various competitions are held in different parts of the city across a wide range of sports.

The most popular is the Clásica de San Sebastián. It’s a prestigious cycling competition that once formed part of the Cycling World Cup. The route covers 236 kilometres where cyclists must tackle up to seven mountain passes.

However, there are also sailing regattas, handball, beach volleyball, and horse racing.

Other Activities

We recommend that you wander through the central streets and enjoy the numerous activities available everywhere, such as brass bands, batucadas, or the parade of giants and big heads.

If you like artisan fairs, we suggest visiting the agricultural products fair on Loiola Street. You can also participate in one of the guided canoe tours on the Urumea River.
