Choose Your Reason to Visit Las Palmas in Summer

Below, we explain the reasons to visit Las Palmas this summer.

Climate

The climate of Las Palmas is enviable and is one of its most prominent attractions, both for domestic and international tourists. Interestingly, it is one of the islands with the most sunshine hours throughout the year.

The average temperature is 25º C throughout the year, a factor that allows many tourists to enjoy their holidays in Las Palmas during autumn or spring. This is due to the trade winds that cool the environment and the cold current of the Atlantic that surrounds the coast. In winter, the Azores high acts as a protective shield, keeping temperatures pleasant and mild.

Beaches

The beaches of Las Palmas are a real treat for the eyes, known for their cleanliness, vast expanse, and comprehensive services. We explain the most popular ones:

  • Las Canteras. Located in the north of the city and is the most frequented by both the residents and tourists. It stretches over 3 kilometres and its waters are known for their calmness. It is important to note that it has been awarded the UNE-EN ISO 14001 certificate, which guarantees quality in its services.
  • El Confital. Located in Isleta, though it is a natural extension of Las Canteras. It spans 1 kilometre. Visitors highlight its clear waters and the perfection of its waves, as well as the beauty of its rocks and cliffs.
  • La Laja. Characterized by its grey sand and moderate waves, although its currents can be somewhat dangerous, so caution is advised when swimming. In addition, numerous water sports are practiced here.

Markets

There are 4 markets in the city that are worth visiting if you like to immerse yourself in the local culture. They are Puerto, Vegueta, Altavista, and Central.

These are gastronomic spaces where you can taste local products such as fruits and vegetables, brought directly from the farms (figs, watercress, tomatoes, etc.). You can also buy local fish such as parrotfish or wreckfish, as well as high-quality meats.

Don’t forget to buy mojo, the quintessential Canarian product, to enjoy it with potatoes.

Maspalomas: The Real Paradise

Being in Las Palmas also means visiting Maspalomas, as it is one of the most important tourist spots in the area.

The first reason is the sea of dunes. It is a natural paradise protected for its immense beauty and for the wide variety of ecosystems it hosts. A total of 400 hectares of organic sand, a palm forest, an excellent beach, and a lagoon.

Moreover, Maspalomas is one of the most important LGBTIQ+ entertainment hubs in Spain. The reason is that it has a shopping centre dedicated to this type of tourism where there are numerous bars and nightclubs, as well as all kinds of businesses: hair salons, jewellery stores, beauty centres, etc.

San Lorenzo Fireworks

The night from the 9th to the 10th of August celebrates the festival of San Lorenzo, classified as a Festival of Tourist Interest of the Canary Islands.

It is a celebration that gathers thousands of people to watch the hundreds of kilos of gunpowder launched in the form of fireworks. It is a true spectacle of colour that begins at 01:00 AM.

Moreover, this year will be very special, since in 2023 it was suspended due to high temperatures. To see them, head to the vicinity of the Church of San Lorenzo and find a good spot, as they can be seen from any point in the neighbourhood and surrounding areas.

Cuisine

Canarian cuisine is synonymous with quality and excellence.

Among the products we recommend you try on your trip to the Canary Islands are tropical fruits like bananas, peaches, or avocados, thanks to the rich soil.

Have you heard of Abona wine? It has a Denomination of Origin, hence it is a reference worldwide.

There are numerous restaurants throughout the city where you can try any of the typical dishes of Las Palmas.

Water Sports

Las Palmas is the island par excellence for water sports, thanks to its magnificent beaches and the numerous companies that organize these activities throughout the city.

These activities are aimed at both beginners and true professionals. The most common are jet skiing, surfing, and diving. However, there are other more special ones like kayaking, kitesurfing, or windsurfing.

Simply approach the information stands of these companies to find out about schedules and prices.

At LOCK & enjoy! we are sure these activities will provide a significant adrenaline rush and will make you continue your journey with more strength and energy than ever.

For any of the mentioned activities, we advise you to use the famous guaguas to move around the city comfortably.
