If there’s one thing we like at LOCK & enjoy! it’s parties, and few are better than carnivals. But it’s not about going to just any carnival, you have to know the Maspalomas Carnival. It is one of the most important in Spain, has its own personality and is held in Las Palmas de Gran Canaria. Not only will you have a great time, you will also enjoy an exceptional climate.
What does Maspalomas Carnival have in store for us this year?
This year’s carnival revolves around one theme: joy as a tribute to television memories. The floats and costumes will have to find a way to capture the idea, something they will achieve through creativity. For ten days, from March 7 to 17, you will see them parade through the streets of the town and at various major events.
In addition, there will be interesting activities such as the Queen’s Gala, comparsas, the Drag Queen Gala, the Sardine Rescue and the Great Carnival Parade. And you will not be alone, as the organization aspires to surpass the number of attendees in 2023, although it will not be easy. Last year, more than 350,000 people attended from both Spain and abroad.
Much of this success is due to the location of the carnival. It is held right on the beach, and the good weather of the Canary Islands is always a great help. So, if you don’t have any plans for March, this carnival is a great excuse to visit Las Palmas. At LOCK & enjoy! we recommend it, as the experience is unique.
What events will be held?
Carnival revolves around several main events:
- Drag Gala. This is the pre-selection of the Maspalomas Drag Queen and its importance is fundamental, because it carries within the essence of the party: transgression. In addition, freedom, imagination and the colorful costumes of the participants are other of its main features.
- Election of the queen. On Carnival Sunday the Grand Dame is chosen, who will be the one who wears the most spectacular costume. The participants dress in a very original way and usually demonstrate a spontaneous personality in order to win.
- Great Cavalcade. The parade of floats, troupes and dancers is one of the central moments of this carnival. The costumes usually refer to real or allegorical characters and there is no lack of bright colors and masks. It will take place on March 16 with this route: it starts at the European Union Avenue along El Escorial Street and ends at Gran Canaria Avenue.
- Burial of the Sardine. It puts an end to the carnival in a spectacular way: with fireworks on the beach. It is a highly recommended experience for its beauty and because it brings together most of the inhabitants of the town.
Secondary events
Beyond the main activities, there are others that you may find interesting. These are the ones that we highlight from LOCK & enjoy!
- Canine Carnival. Not only humans enjoy the party, dogs have their moment to shine. Their owners walk them through the streets in fancy costumes, something worth seeing.
- Mogollones. People come to Maspalomas from all over, which makes hundreds end up congregated in the streets dressed in costumes and dancing to the music. It is a very simple way to participate and you will have a great time.
- Salsa Night. It takes place from midnight and is organized by different dance schools. Of course, the show is open to the public.
