If there’s one thing we love at LOCK & enjoy!, it’s parties, and few surpass carnival celebrations. But it’s not just about going to any carnival; you have to experience the one in Maspalomas. It’s one of Spain’s most important carnivals, boasting its own personality, and it takes place in Las Palmas de Gran Canaria. Not only will you have a great time, but you’ll also enjoy exceptional weather.
What does this year’s Maspalomas Carnival have in store for us?
This year’s carnival revolves around a theme: joy as a tribute to television memories. Floats and costumes will have to find a way to embody this idea, which they’ll achieve through creativity. For ten days, from March 7th to 17th, you’ll see them parade through the streets of the town and at various important events.
Moreover, exciting activities await you, such as the Queen’s Gala, carnival groups, the Drag Queen Gala, the Sardine’s Rescue, and the Grand Carnival Parade. And you won’t be alone, as the organizers aim to surpass the attendance of 2023, though it won’t be easy. Last year, more than 350,000 people attended from both Spain and abroad.
Much of this success is due to the carnival’s location. It takes place right by the beach, and the Canary Islands’ excellent weather is always a great help. So, if you have no plans for March, this carnival is a prime excuse to visit Las Palmas. At LOCK & enjoy!, we highly recommend it, as the experience is truly unique.
What events will be held?
The carnival revolves around several main events:
- Drag Gala. This is the preselection of the Maspalomas Drag Queen and its importance is fundamental, as it embodies the essence of the festival: transgression. Additionally, freedom, imagination, and the colorful costumes of the participants are among its main characteristics.
- Queen’s Election. On Carnival Sunday, the Grand Dame is chosen, the one who will wear the most spectacular costume. Participants dress very originally and usually demonstrate a spontaneous personality to win.
- Grand Parade. The parade of floats, carnival groups, and dancers is one of the central moments of this carnival. Costumes usually refer to real or allegorical characters, with cheerful colors and masks aplenty. It will take place on March 16th following this route: starting on Avenida de la Unión Europea, going through Calle El Escorial, and concluding on Avenida de Gran Canaria.
- Burial of the Sardine. It spectacularly concludes the carnival with fireworks on the beach. It’s a highly recommended experience for its beauty and because it gathers most of the town’s inhabitants.
Secondary Events
Beyond the main activities, there are others that might interest you. Here are the ones we highlight at LOCK & enjoy!:
- Canine Carnival. Not only humans enjoy the festivities, but dogs also have their moment to shine. Their owners parade them through the streets in fantasy costumes, something worth seeing.
- Street Parties. People from all over flock to Maspalomas, resulting in hundreds congregating in the streets dressed up and dancing to the music. It’s a very simple way to participate and you’ll have a great time.
- Salsa Night. It takes place from midnight onwards and is organized by different dance schools. Of course, the show is open to the public.
