The city of Málaga is well-known for its excellent gastronomy, which is why tapas bars are a major attraction for both locals and tourists. At LOCK & enjoy! we’ve put together a small tapas tour in Málaga so that you can enjoy the city in a unique way.
Discover the Best Tapas Route in Málaga
We have prepared a selection of bars and restaurants in Málaga where you can taste the best tapas in the city, some of which are free, meaning you only pay for your drink.
Taberna Casa Lola
If you prefer a bar with Andalusian-style decor, Casa Lola is the perfect place for you. It opened in 2010 but has been so successful that it now has 3 establishments in Málaga.
The success lies in the quality of its tapas and the wide variety because it offers 60 options including pinchos, montaditos, and larger dishes. Some of the highlights include Russian salad, mini hamburgers made from Iberian pork, and patatas bravas. They also serve traditional Málaga dishes, and not to forget their draught vermouth.
Don’t hesitate to visit Casa Lola, one of the top-rated tapas bars in Málaga on Tripadvisor.
Las Merchanas
This tavern has interior decorations that are worth seeing. The reason is the numerous memorabilia related to Málaga’s Holy Week, as its founder is a brother in this festival. It’s so successful that there are now a total of 3 establishments in the city, but at LOCK & enjoy! we recommend the one located downtown, the first to open.
As for tapas, most customers rave about the “pringá” montaditos, fried octopus, or homemade flamenquines.
Just 8 minutes away from this bar, we have our lockers on Carretería street, specifically at Dos Aceras, 8. Take the opportunity to leave your luggage or backpacks and freely explore the most famous tapas bars in Málaga.
Taberna La Trancá
The decor of this small bar and its quality tapas make it a must-visit in Málaga. The walls are adorned with album covers from famous singers like Julio Iglesias, Isabel Pantoja, and Lola Flores, among others.
We recommend trying the tripe with chickpeas, as it’s the house specialty according to most customers. Also noteworthy are the broad beans with ham, migas, and spinach with chickpeas. These are traditional and simple tapas, but very well prepared. Also, the vermouth is of the highest quality; we recommend the Moclinejo with a slice of orange, very typical of Málaga.
What’s striking about the place is that the bill is written in white chalk on the bar, just as it was traditionally done in most Andalusian bars.
Mesón Mariano
This place specializes in artichokes because they serve them grilled, battered, in salad, or Montillana style. It’s a reference in Málaga’s restaurant sector, having been open since 1969.
The bar is one of its most striking features because it’s full of small clay pots from which they serve portions.
They also offer other types of tapas and dishes known for their intense flavors, like porra antequerana, onion-stewed tuna, or cod.
El Tapeo de Cervantes
Opened in 2008 with the aim of becoming a traditional yet creative restaurant.
Their menu offers a wide variety of tapas that combine classic recipes with a few doses of innovation. For example, crispy prawns or cheek meat in red wine. All ingredients used are fresh and seasonal. We’d also like to highlight the extensive selection of wines, both local and international.
The venue is small, cozy, and quiet, and the decor is simple yet typical of a traditional Spanish bar. We advise booking in advance as it’s always busy.
La Andaluza
This bar is not only present in Málaga but is part of a franchise network throughout Spain. It offers top-quality tapas and dishes made with traditional Andalusian recipes. At LOCK & enjoy! we love the honey aubergines, salmorejo, or homemade croquettes, among other tapas on the menu. There are also heartier dishes like oxtail or Cordoban flamenquín.
It has typical Andalusian decor with numerous objects and elements that recall the historical traditions of southern Spain. It has very affordable prices, which is why it’s always full, whether for lunch, dinner, or supper.
La Plancha Taberna
This bar is known for its family atmosphere, making it ideal for a casual meal with your partner or friends. The decor is modern but with rustic touches.
Among its standout tapas are homemade croquettes, fried cheese with jam, and assorted montaditos. However, its specialty is grilled dishes with gourmet meats and roasted vegetables as sides.
Its prices are very economical compared to the portion sizes, which has made it a popular choice among locals.
La Plancha Taberna is located very close to our lockers at María Zambrano, specifically on the same street but at numbers 12-14.
