One of the passions we harbor at LOCK & enjoy! is the sea. March will witness one of Palma de Mallorca’s most significant sporting events: the Trofeo S.A.R. Princesa Sofía Mallorca by Iberostar. It’s a highly anticipated regatta on the island, now in its 53rd edition and thriving. This 2024, it holds even greater significance than usual.

All About the 53rd Edition of the Trofeo Princesa Sofía Mallorca

Known as the Sofía locally, this is a light sailing competition held annually since 1968. It’s organized by Club Nàutic S’Arenal, Club Marítimo San Antonio de la Playa, Real Club Náutico de Palma, Real Federación Española de Vela, and Federación Balear de Vela. It’s also backed by World Sailing and major Balearic public institutions. As you can see, it’s a prestigious event.

And it’s not without reason; it’s one of the island’s key events, among the first of the year. It garners genuine excitement as it provides an excellent opportunity to witness sailing stars. Consider that over 1000 participants from 53 countries, including members of royal families, will compete across various categories in Mallorca’s bay waters.

The 2024 Competition

For this year’s event, over 300 teams across different categories have registered. Given the upcoming Paris Olympics in 2024, the regatta will adapt accordingly. It will be the first to gather all 10 classes that will feature in the France event, serving as a preparatory stage.

The Sofía will take place from March 29th to April 6th, featuring races in the following categories:

  • Men’s Classes: ILCA 7, 49er, iQFOiL Men, and Formula Kite Men.
  • Women’s Classes: ILCA 6, 49er FX, iQFOiL Women, and Formula Kite Women.
  • Mixed: 470 and Nacra 17.

Moreover, it’s one of the few competitions where you’ll witness the entire Spanish sailing team. This is primarily because there are currently no Spanish participants in two categories: ILCA 7 and women’s iQFOiL. Joel Rodríguez and Joaquín Blanco are the contenders for the former, while Pilar Lamadrid and Nicole Van der Velden vie for the latter. This marks their final chance to qualify for the Olympics. From LOCK & enjoy!, we wish them the best of luck!

What Are the Competition Boats Like?

If you’re new to the world of sailing, terms like ILCA 7 or iQFOiL might be unfamiliar. To clear things up, at LOCK & enjoy!, we provide the necessary explanations. These refer to the names of the boat class used in the competition. For instance, the 49er or forty-niner has two crew members, weighs 75 kilograms, and has a single sail.

Each category employs a vessel with its own specifications. For instance, the IQFoil is a sailboat specific to windsurfing. In 2024, it will replace the RS:X as an Olympic class.
