It is a very popular regatta on the island that reaches its 53rd edition in very good health. In this 2024 it will have a greater relevance than usual.
All about the 53rd edition of the Princess Sofia Trophy Mallorca
The Sofia, as it is called in Palma, is a dinghy dinghy sailing competition that has been held every year since 1968. It is organized by Club Nàutic S’Arenal, Club Marítimo San Antonio de la Playa, Real Club Náutico de Palma, the Royal Spanish Sailing Federation and the Balearic Sailing Federation. It is also supported by World Sailing and the main Balearic public institutions. As you can see, it is an event of depth.
And it is not by chance, since it is one of the key events of the year, as well as being one of the first to be held. On the island it causes a real sensation, since it is a good opportunity to see the stars of the regattas. Note that more than 1,000 participants from 53 countries will be in attendance, including members of the royal family. All of them will compete in different categories in the waters of the bay of Mallorca.
The 2024 competition
More than 300 teams in different categories have registered for this year’s competition. Given that the 2024 Olympic Games will take place in Paris, the regatta will be adapted to such circumstances. Thus, it is going to be the first to bring together the 10 classes that will be present at the event to be held in France. It will therefore serve as a preparation.
The Sofia will take place from March 29th to April 6th and you will be able to witness regattas in the following categories:
- Men’s classes: ILCA 7, 49er, iQFOiL Men and Formula Kite Men.
- Women’s classes: ILCA 6, 49er FX, iQFOiL Women and Formula Kite Women.
- Mixed: 470 and Nacra 17.
It is also one of the few competitions of the year in which you will be able to see the entire Spanish racing team. The main reason is that there are still no Spanish participants in two categories: ILCA 7 and women’s iQFOiL. The contenders in the former are Joel Rodriguez and Joaquin Blanco and in the latter, Pilar Lamadrid and Nicole Van der Velden. This will be their last chance to qualify for the Olympic Games.
