Celebration of the Paris 2024 Olympics

The bid was presented in 2015, with the official selection occurring in 2017 during the 130th IOC Session. In the final decision, Paris competed against Los Angeles, California (USA), which withdrew its bid in exchange for hosting the 2028 Olympics.

Paris is fortunate to have hosted two previous Olympics, the first in 1900 and the last in 1924.

Curiosities

Note that this celebration spans from July 26th to August 11th (inclusive). France aims to make it an unforgettable event, which is why there are several noteworthy curiosities.

  • It will be the first time in Olympic history that the opening ceremony will not be held in a stadium. Instead, the Seine River will take center stage. The ceremony begins at the Austerlitz Bridge, continues around the îles de Saint-Louis and la Cité, with athletes traveling aboard boats along the heart of the capital. The grand finale will be at Trocadero. One of the significant advantages of this new approach is that it will be free of charge, as the banks of the Seine are public.
  • Most Olympic events will take place in iconic locations throughout Paris. 80% of the competitions will occur within just 7 kilometers of the city center and less than 2 kilometers from the Stade de France. Locations like the Grand Palais, Esplanade des Invalides, and Champ de Mars will transform into true sports venues.
  • The women’s marathon on August 11th pays homage to the French Revolution, specifically the Women’s March on Versailles. The race will pass through famous city landmarks such as the Champs-Élysées and Place de la Concorde.

Numbers

The Paris 2024 Olympics boast impressive numbers at every level. For instance, 45,000 volunteers have committed to helping manage and organize the event, with 20,000 accredited journalists covering it. Approximately 10,500 athletes are expected to compete across 329 events.

Venues

The sports venues hosting various Olympic events are numerous. Here are some key locations where you can witness competitions from public spaces:

  • Grand Palais (capacity: 8,000 people): fencing and taekwondo.
  • Place de la Concorde: skateboarding, BMX cycling, 3×3 basketball, and breaking.
  • Trocadero (capacity: approximately 3,500 people): triathlon, road cycling, athletics, and open water swimming.
  • Hôtel de Ville: athletics.
  • Les Invalides: archery (capacity for 8,000 people).
  • Stade de France (capacity of about 80,000 people): athletics and rugby.
  • Paris La Défense Arena (17,000 people in total): water polo and swimming.

Outside Paris, equestrian sports and modern pentathlon take place at the Palace of Versailles Park. Additionally, Marseille hosts sailing competitions.

New Sports Disciplines

After years of evaluation, the IOC has decided to introduce several new sports disciplines at the Paris 2024 Olympics.

Firstly, breakdancing—a popular urban dance style dating back to the 1970s. LOCK & enjoy! recommends attending the competition on August 9th and 10th at Place de la Concorde.

Another new Olympic sport is kitesurfing, known for combining elements of surfing, windsurfing, and paragliding. The first tournaments will be held on August 4th with various regattas segregated by gender.

Oceanic regattas are a major innovation for the Paris 2024 Olympics, featuring yacht races on the open sea, covering distances exceeding 1,000 nautical miles.

470 sailing is another new addition, characterized by its team-based nature and thrilling competition, based at La Marina in Marseille.

Lastly, extreme slalom—a challenging kayak sport requiring physical endurance and skill, held at the nautical stadium in Vaires-sur-Marne.
