It’s not just a simple competition but a unique experience that turns running into a true urban adventure. Can you imagine running at night, under the stars, with the city lights as your companions? We encourage you to enjoy it, as it is one of the most important and anticipated sporting events in El Retiro of the year. Moreover, you no longer need to worry about your backpack or belongings (mobile phone, keys, wallet, etc.), as there are numerous lockers in Madrid where you can leave everything you need during the race.

A Magical Night for Runners of All Levels

The 3rd Popular Race of El Retiro takes place on 21 June at 21:00 in the iconic Retiro Park, one of Madrid’s green lungs. This sporting event covers a total of 5 kilometres, making it accessible to both beginners and experienced runners. Now then, where does it start and finish? The start (21:00) and the finish line are located on Paseo de la Reina Cristina, an iconic spot that makes this race even more special.

Why Participate in This Night Race?

We are certain that running through El Retiro at night is a magical experience due to the city lights, the cool breeze, and the energy radiated by the hundreds of participants. One of the most notable advantages of this race is that it avoids the high daytime temperatures, making it a perfect option to enjoy this sport in summer. Furthermore, the route is entirely accessible and attractive. The 5-kilometre circuit encircles the park and is therefore completely urban and paved. Additionally, each kilometre is signposted so you can gradually control your pace. We would also like to highlight that the circuit for runners is completely closed to traffic, thus ensuring maximum safety. And finally, it is a completely free event. As for participants, only those born in 2009 or earlier can take part; that is, minors under 16 years old cannot participate in the night race in El Retiro. On the other hand, there is no distinction of gender or nationality. However, registrations are limited to 1,000 participants, with the last day to register being 20 June at 23:59. Don’t hesitate any longer and register on the website before the spots run out! If you are coming to Madrid by train to participate in the 3rd Popular Race of El Retiro, there are backpack lockers at Atocha. Book in advance and access discounts and promotions.

Everything You Need to Know Before Running

The night race in El Retiro is a straightforward competition compared to other types of marathons. However, at LOCK & enjoy! we explain a series of aspects that may be of interest before participating.

Amenities

Firstly, the organisers of this event provide a series of liquid refreshment points in the finish area so you can hydrate and regain energy when you finish. On the other hand, all participants are covered by sports accident insurance, which means you are protected against all kinds of contingencies. Run with complete peace of mind!

Categories and Prizes

This sporting event features two main categories: male and female. The top three finishers receive a trophy, and prizes are also awarded to the top three in the following age classifications:

  • Senior: 16 – 34 years old.
  • Master A: 35 – 44 years old.
  • Master B: 45 – 54 years old.
  • Master C: 55 years and older.

However, it is important to note that prizes are not cumulative; that is, only one prize per person can be obtained.

Rules and Recommendations

It is important to consider a series of rules and recommendations to ensure the experience is completely safe and enjoyable for both you and others. The first thing to keep in mind is that race bibs are not distributed on the same day of the event. Therefore, they must be collected the day before, that is, on Friday, 20 June, although the time and place of collection are yet to be confirmed. You only need to present your identity document and the registration confirmation. Moreover, the maximum time to complete the route is approximately one and a half hours. It is also crucial to note that there are a series of rules which, if not followed, can lead to disqualification. Among the most common are the use of prohibited substances, not completing the official route, or running with another runner’s bib, for example. Keep in mind that for the control and monitoring of this competition, there are judges and a large team of personnel responsible for the organisation.

This Is How a Night of Running in El Retiro Is Experienced

We recommend that around 20:00 you head to the park, as it starts to fill with runners warming up. Additionally, there is music at every corner and plenty of lighting. Regarding the route, this event takes you through the park’s most iconic spots, such as Paseo de Coches, the Estanque Grande, or the Rosaleda, among others. And finally, collect your medal at the finish line if you have been one of the winners. We are sure it will be a magical, happy, and unforgettable moment. And don’t forget the best part when you finish: a tour of Madrid’s oldest bars to regain your strength! At LOCK & enjoy! we are with you to accompany you in the night race in El Retiro.
