The Las Palmas International Film Festival is celebrated from April 25th to May 4th. It is one of the most important events in the city and, therefore, in LOCK & enjoy! we want to be with you during those days. If you like cinema, we encourage you to continue reading to learn about all the activities that take place on the occasion of this event.

We would like to point out that since 2000 it has become a reference in the city. The reason is that it is committed to innovative films and away from the commercial circuits and, therefore, it is a platform for new filmmaking talents.

Program of the Las Palmas International Film Festival

The festival’s program is characterized by a wide variety of sections, but always focused on auteur and independent cinema. The authors and their works are not yet known, although registrations have already closed. However, the sections that make up the entire event have already been confirmed.

Official Section

It is the most important part of the Las Palmas International Film Festival. International films of great artistic quality compete in it. For this purpose, a series of works that stand out for their originality and, in addition, for their capacity to innovate are selected in advance. Both feature films and short films compete in the official section.

The jury is composed of renowned film industry professionals. On the other hand, the prizes awarded are for Best Film, Best Direction, Best Screenplay and Best Acting.

Canarias Cinema

The Canarias Cinema section is one of the most special of the festival. The reason is that it is focused on films made in the Canary Islands and also by Canarian filmmakers. The aim is to promote local talent and, in addition, to give visibility to productions that reflect the particular Canarian identity.

Banda Aparte

Do you like different and daring films? If so, you can’t miss the films screened in this category. They are both risky and avant-garde, and therefore challenge the traditional norms of cinema as you know it.

The short and medium-length films in this category are characterized by essayism, virtuality, geography and anthropology, among other particularities.

Déjà Vu

This festival event screens only great cinema classics, hence its name. However, these films have been restored or remastered to offer viewers a rediscovery of the origins of film history.

It’s about going back in time and, for a few moments, getting carried away by films that were shot before the turn of the century.

Panorama

The Panorama section is focused on films that have already been screened at famous international festivals such as Berlin, Cannes or Venice. It is important to keep in mind that these are not films that have been successful, as some of them were not even marketed in theaters.

Cinema Effect

The films screened in this space are exclusive premieres, but in collaboration with other renowned festivals and streaming platforms.

This is a great opportunity for you to enjoy the premieres before anyone else!

MECAS (Market of Almost Made Cinema)

This section of the festival does not screen films because it is a networking and financing space for projects that are in the post-production phase.

MECAS brings together filmmakers and producers seeking to present their works that are still in development and thus be able to obtain sources of financing.

Where is it held?

The Las Palmas International Film Festival is not held in a single location, as the vast majority of events and activities are organized in different venues throughout the city.

The Multicines Monopol are the epicenter of the event because most of the films in the competing sections are concentrated there. The reason is that these theaters have the latest technology and, therefore, offer an ideal environment to enjoy the best cinema.

On the other hand, the Centro de Iniciativas de la Caja de Canarias (CICCA) also plays a very important role in the organization of the festival. This building hosts the most culture-oriented part of the festival (special screenings, round tables, interviews with filmmakers, etc.), as well as the MECAS.

The famous Guiniguada Theater also hosts screenings and special events. It is the perfect place for the presentation of documentaries, as well as to enjoy meetings and interviews with the most relevant film directors of the event.

The Elder Museum of Science and Technology, one of the icons of the cultural offer in cultural offerings in Las Palmas de Gran Canaria, has been the placehas been the place chosen for the events of the Cinema Effect section. We would like to point out that, very close to this cultural center, we have our Lockers in Las Canteras so you can leave your backpack or suitcase while you enjoy any of the activities of the festival.

And finally, the Alfredo Kraus Auditorium. It is not confirmed, but in previous editions the closing gala has been held here. It is one of the most exciting moments, since the awards are presented to the winning films.

Come and enjoy the Las Palmas International Film Festival! And, remember, book one of our Lockers in Las Palmas to enjoy to enjoy any of the tourist tourist activities in Las Palmas.
