Whatever your preferences are, you will find in this city something you will love. From the old part of the city, to the beach, the fishermen’s quarter, to the auditorium, Las Palmas de Gran Canaria has something for everyone.
The neighborhood of Vegueta
It is one of the oldest neighborhoods in the city. The neighborhood of Vegueta is a great area to visit on foot, as its streets are cobbled and therefore it is mainly a pedestrian area. You will find a wide variety of classical buildings, such as the Casa de Colón or the cathedral of Santa Ana, presiding over the square of the same name.
However, to absorb what this area has to offer, the best thing to do is to get lost in its streets. Some of them are worth visiting, such as Calle Pelota or Calle de los Balcones, you will discover the reason for its name as soon as you get there. The market is another place you should not forget. It is one of the oldest in the city, and in it you can taste a lot of delicacies typical of the place.
Neighborhood of San Cristobal
This neighborhood, located in the south of the city, is the seafaring neighborhood par excellence. Colorful fishermen’s houses very close to the seashore make this area, today not as lively and active as it was 150 years ago, still maintains its picturesque style and its seafaring soul. The Torreón de San Pedro Mártir, what was once a defensive construction for spotting enemy ships, crowns this part of Las Palmas. Come here if you want to try the local food and if you are looking for fresh, quality fish.
Although this neighborhood is a bit far from the center, your luggage will not be a problem and LOCK & enjoy! will offer you a solution to store your suitcase.
The Bandama caldera
If nature walks are your thing, you can’t miss the Bandama caldera. It is located in the center of the triangle formed by the towns of Santa Brígida, Telde and Las Palmas de Gran Canaria. Among its characteristics are:
- A 216 meter high depression.
- 1100 meters in diameter.
- A circular route of 3 km that will take you through the ravines of Las Goteras and Guiniguada.
It is a good land for vineyards, so in the area you can find many wineries, especially in the town of Santa Brigida. It is a Protected Natural Area, since its geological value and the variety of flora and fauna it has are exceptional.
You visit the area with a small backpack with a sandwich and some water. We will take care of the luggage lockers.
Route along the Confital beach
El Confital is an urban beach. However, and although it is easily accessible both on foot and by car, it is not very visited. It is a virgin area and does not have any services, although it is an attraction for surfers because of what they call the Confital right, a wave to the right with unusual characteristics. In fact, this sandy area has witnessed several surfing championships.
El Confital is a good place as a starting point for a route through the protected area of La Isleta. But another reason that makes this beach spectacular is its sunset. Give it a chance, enjoy the ocean and the light falling and highlighting the Teide in Tenerife. Leave your suitcases in aLOCK & enjoy! take your shoes off and sit down to enjoy the sunset.
Alfredo Kraus Auditorium
In honor of one of the great palmeros par excellence, this auditorium is worth a visit. If you don’t have the chance to see a show, at least go inside to visit it. It is a very colorful building, adorned with sculptures that pay homage to the sea. Always with that maritime feeling so typical of the island, its different floors, painted in blue, change tonality, just as the blue of the ocean changes with the depth.
Worth seeing is the Symphony Hall, which has a huge 100 square meter window that opens to the depths of the Atlantic, so you can enjoy the view while listening to the music.
