Carmona
Just 30 minutes by car from Seville lies the town of Carmona. It’s one of the most important monumental gems of the province and of Andalusia, as it was founded by the Carthaginians and later fortified by the Romans and Arabs. It’s characterised by its cobbled streets that lead you through churches, convents, and stately homes. Additionally, we recommend visiting the Puerta de Sevilla, the Alcázar, or the views from the Parador Nacional. In this charming town, it’s essential to go without any luggage, as there’s quite a bit of walking involved. Don’t leave Carmona without trying the spinach with chickpeas or the salmorejo!
Osuna
The town of Osuna is further from Seville, with the journey taking approximately an hour, but it’s well worth it. It’s a true artistic gem, dominated by Baroque art, yet retaining the elegance characteristic of Andalusian architecture. Must-see stops include the former University of Osuna, the Collegiate Church, or Calle San Pedro, the latter considered one of the most beautiful in Europe. We’d also like to highlight the archaeological site of Coto de las Canteras. Did you know that some scenes from the famous series “Game of Thrones” were filmed in Osuna? As a result, it has become a tourist attraction, drawing more and more visitors.
Santiponce
If you’re a history enthusiast, Santiponce is a must-visit on your holiday. It’s just 15 minutes from the centre of Seville and is home to one of the most impressive archaeological complexes in Spain: Itálica, also considered one of the best one-day excursions from Seville. The town is characterised by a tranquil atmosphere, with its traditional bars and restaurants. A visit to the Monastery of San Isidoro del Campo, a Gothic and Mudejar treasure, is also highly recommended. Regarding gastronomy, there’s a wide variety, but you can’t leave without trying the grilled Iberian meats or the cured meats. On the other hand, if you have a sweet tooth, you also have the famous tortas de aceite or the wine doughnuts.
Marchena
The town of Marchena has its own personality, something special that makes it stand out from the rest. It’s located about an hour by car, but it’s also well worth the visit. It boasts impressive artistic heritage and a deeply rooted musical and cultural tradition. For example, the first thing that catches the eye is its Almohad wall, as it still preserves its medieval gates. On the other hand, the Church of San Juan Bautista stands out, where one of the Renaissance jewels is kept: the Sacristy, characterised by being decorated with works by Zurbarán. Did you know that Marchena is the land of flamenco? The reason is that numerous legendary flamenco singers were born here, and thus, the passion for cante jondo remains very present among its population. Head to the central square to enjoy tapas and a glass of wine while soaking up the local atmosphere.
Alcalá de Guadaíra
This town is located just 20 kilometres from Seville. Moreover, it has gained much popularity over the years as a perfect getaway for nature lovers. It boasts an impressive medieval castle that’s well worth a visit. Additionally, the old flour mills situated on the banks of the Guadaíra River are a symbol of the town’s history and tradition. In Alcalá de Guadaíra, you can also purchase a wide variety of breads (cuarterón, bobillo, etc.), as it has a strong baking tradition due to its artisanal production processes passed down through generations. We also recommend trying their famous snails, as well as their homemade stews.
Estepa
The town of Estepa is one of the furthest from Seville, with a distance of 110 kilometres between them. Are you familiar with the mantecados and polvorones of Estepa? They’re very typical at Christmas and originate from this town, so much so that they have a Denomination of Origin. You can’t leave without making a small visit to one of the traditional bakeries where the famous mantecados are made. You can also take the opportunity to taste the olive oil, one of the most awarded in all of Spain. However, not everything about this town revolves around sweets, as it’s also known for its charming historic centre, as well as the Torre del Homenaje of the old Alcázar and the Church of Santa María la Mayor. Choose any of the day trips from Seville that we’ve proposed at LOCK & enjoy! If you have a bit more time, we also recommend engaging in any of the tourist activities in Seville to continue enjoying one of the best cities in Spain to the fullest.
