Paris 2024 Olympic Games Celebration
The bid was submitted in 2015, however, its official election was in 2017 during the 130th Session of the IOC (International Olympic Committee). In the final, it was also competing with Los Angeles in California (United States), however, the latter reached an agreement with the IOC, whereby it withdrew its bid in exchange for hosting the Olympics in 2028.
Paris is fortunate to have already hosted two Olympic Games, the first in 1900 and the last in 1924.
Curiosities
Keep in mind that this celebration runs from July 26 to August 11 (both inclusive). France has set out to make it an unforgettable event, hence there are a number of curiosities worth noting.
- It is the first time in Olympic history that the opening ceremony will not be held in a stadium. On this occasion, the Seine River is the protagonist. It will start at the Pont d’Austerlitz to go around the islands of St. Louis and La Cité. The athletes will sail aboard boats that will follow the athletes’ route through the heart of the capital. The grand finale will be at Trocadero. One of the most important advantages of this novelty is that there will be no fee, since the banks of the Seine River are public.
- Most of the Olympic Games are held at emblematic venues in Paris. Eighty percent of the competitions are held just 7 kilometers from the center and less than 2 kilometers from the Stade de France. However, places such as the Grand Palais, the Esplanade des Invalides or Champ de Mars are transformed into real sports venues.
- The women’s marathon (August 11) is a tribute to the time of the French Revolution, more specifically the Women’s March on Versailles. Therefore, this competition will run through some of the most famous monuments and parks of the city, such as the Champs Elysées or the Place de la Concorde.
Figures
The celebration of the Paris Olympic Games in 2024 yields figures that are impressive by any standards. For example, a total of 45,000 volunteers have decided to participate in the management and organization of this ceremony, in addition, there are also 20,000 accredited journalists.
How many fins are there? The number is close to 10500, professionals who will participate in a total of 329 events.
Headquarters
The sports centers where the different Olympic events are held are very numerous, however, take note of the main ones so that you can get closer and watch the competitions from the public road:
- Grand Palais (capacity: 8000 people): fencing and taekwondo.
- Plaza de la Concordia: skateboarding, BMX cycling, 3×3 basketball and breaking.
- Trocadero (capacity: approximately 3500 people): triathlon, road cycling, athletics and open water swimming.
- Hôtel de Ville: athletics.
- Les Invalides: archery (capacity for 8000 people).
- Stade de France (can accommodate about 80,000 people): athletics and rugby.
- Paris La Défense Arena: (17000 people in total): water polo and swimming.
Outside Paris, equestrian sports and the modern pentathlon (Parc du Palais des Versales) are also held. Marseille also hosts the sailing competition.
New sports disciplines
After years of study, the IOC has decided to include a number of sports disciplines that, for the first time, will compete at the Paris 2024 Olympic Games.
First of all, the breakdance. It consists of a type of urban dance very well known, however, its origin dates back to 1970. At LOCK & enjoy! we recommend you to attend the competition to be held on August 9 and 10 at La Concorde.
Another new Olympic sport is kitesurfing. It is very popular due to its ability to concentrate all kinds of water sports:
Ocean regattas have been another of the great novelties that the IOC has marked for the Paris 2024 Olympic Games. These are yacht races, but with the difference that they are held on the high seas. The objective is to cross long sea crossings on the high seas, therefore, the distances that can be overcome are more than 1000 nautical miles.
The 470 sailing modality is another novelty for this edition. It is a nautical sailing boat sport. It is characterized mainly by being a team sport, therefore, the doses of excitement and adventure are more than assured. If you are interested, you should head to Marseille, more specifically to La Marina.
And finally, the slalom slalom. It is a new type of kayaking that is characterized by being an extreme and exciting sport. It stands out for the enormous physical endurance of the professionals and for the bravery, as well as for the skill. It is held in the nautical stadium of Vaires-sur-Marne.
