What is the July Fair in Valencia?

It is the most important event of the summer and its origin dates back to 1871, a time when the city was experiencing economic and industrial growth.

The local authorities came up with the idea of offering a series of cultural and festive activities in order to boost trade and attract tourism. The main reason was that the city was depopulated in summer and it became necessary to retain the population for a few more days to ensure local commerce.

Program of the July Fair of Valencia 2024

The Gran Fira de Juliol begins its activities on July 1st and ends on July 28th. The official program for this year has more than 200 activities, most of them free of charge.

Note that this celebration is not in a particular area, as the activities are held in many neighborhoods and districts of the city. In case you have any doubts, check the timetables of the city buses and the Valencia Metro at the web.

Fireworks

Fireworks shows are a must in Valencia. For a month and in different places there are fireworks to commemorate the celebration of this event. The fireworks castles are launched every Saturday of the month at midnight and also with the best pyrotechnic companies in the city. We tell you which ones they are:

  • July 1st (inauguration): Plaza del Ayuntamiento.
  • July 6: Plaza del Ayuntamiento.
  • July 13: Monteolivete Bridge.
  • July 20: La Marina.
  • July 27th: Town Hall Square.

At LOCK & enjoy! we recommend that you go with time to choose a good place, as it is likely that there will be crowds that will prevent you from seeing the fireworks normally.

Jazz Festival

This festival lasts a week and is also held in various neighborhoods of the city. There are a total of 8 free concerts for you to enjoy this magnificent musical genre:

  • July 20: Martina Sabariego (Plaza de Campanar).
  • July 21: Paco Soler (Plaza del Santísimo Cristo de Nazaret).
  • July 27: Eduard Marquina (Parc Central).
  • July 28th: Julia Sapiña (Parc de Benicalap).

Visit the website for all the program in case you are interested in any of the paying artists.

Viveros Concerts

It is one of the few paid activities at the July Fair in Valencia. It is a series of concerts held in Jardins de Vivers where nationally renowned artists perform.

From July 2 to July 23 (both inclusive) there are concerts. Among the artists we can highlight: Sergio Dalma, Niña Pastori, Pablo López, Julieta Venegas or Taburete, to name just a few.

It is one of the most crowded and most attended events, therefore, we recommend you to buy your tickets as soon as possible.

Amusement fair

The amusement fair already opened on June 22, however, it is an essential element in the July Fair in Valencia, as it also brings together many tourists visiting the city. Keep in mind that the last day to enjoy its attractions is August 4. It is located in the old Turia Riverbed.

This fair is open from Sunday to Thursday from 18:30 to 01:00 hours, however, on Fridays and Saturdays it is a little longer, until 02:00.

It is an ideal place to go with the family or with the little ones. The fair has tombolas, food stalls, fairground booths and the usual attractions.

The Battle of Flowers

This event is held on the last day of the fair and also attracts many tourists. It takes place in the famous Paseo de la Alameda and starts at 8:00 pm on July 28.

It consists of a parade of floral floats in which the participants throw carnations to the public and vice versa. The floats are made up of girls and women representing the Fallas sectors, as well as the official queens of the Alicante and Castellón festivals. The participants are equipped with tennis rackets to symbolically dodge the carnations that are thrown from the public. Finally, once the floats have finished parading, thousands of people go out to the Paseo de la Alameda to continue the fun by throwing flowers at each other.

More than one million carnations are used in this celebration full of music, light and color.

Other activities

In almost all of the central neighborhoods there are numerous outdoor activities such as magic shows, children’s workshops, monologues or storytelling. We recommend that you do not have a fixed course and let yourself get lost in the streets to enjoy these small details that go unnoticed.

On the other hand, the City Council of Valencia has incorporated to the official program a novelty that is worth knowing. It is a free bus shuttle to go to the Albufera and, in addition, includes a boat ride at the end of the visit. The tour will be conducted by an environmental educator who provides information about the magnificent natural environment.

Enjoy the July Fair in Valencia! If you are visiting and need to leave your backpack, at LOCK & enjoy! we have Lockers in Valencia and, in addition, with USB charger and 24-hour video surveillance. Make a reservation!
