The Alameda de H\u00e9rcules: origins and name<\/h2>\n

Today, the Alameda de H\u00e9rcules is one of the epicenters of the capital of Seville. However, this has not always been so. Its origins date back to no less than 1574<\/strong>, when the garden was built right in what was the bed of the Guadalquivir River. More than 400 years of history make it the oldest public garden in Europe. Almost nothing! <\/p>\n

This great work, which, of course, became the favorite strolling area of the Sevillian aristocracy, was an initiative of the Count of Barajas. It is not surprising that other cities around the world wanted to replicate its majesty. This is the case of the Alameda Central in Mexico City and the Alameda de los Descalzos in Lima<\/strong>. <\/p>\n

And the name? Well, it all comes from the columns that preside over the south entrance<\/strong>. Or, more specifically, to one of the figures that crowns one of these architectural elements. We are referring to the Roman demigod Hercules. The other figure is that of Julius Caesar<\/strong> and both are the work of the sculptor Diego de Pesquera. In 1764 two new columns were added at the opposite entrance. They depict two lions holding the heraldic shields of Seville and Spain. <\/p>\n
